We have been working on bringing you a new range of our Homemade Scottish Tablet Flavours.

Over the last couple of months the flavours were launched for the Edinburgh Festival and went down a storm!

All flavours have now been added to our website and are available to purchase in 2 x 150g Bags - all prices include post and packing:

Award Wining Original:  Our Original Tablet was awarded Guild of Fine Foods Double Gold Great Taste Award and gets amazing feedback.  Smooth and Creamy, it just melts in your mouth.

Stem Ginger: Take our Award Wining original Tablet and add shavings of stem ginger and you have this wonderful flavour.  This flavour sells out 1st no matter where we go!  Have to say it's not my favourite to make - I just hate shaving Stem Ginger!

White Chocolate and Cardamom: Ladies just love this one!  Ground Cardamom and White Chocolate are added to our original recipe and the flavour that they create is stunning.  The Cardomom adds a warmth and spiciness to the smoothness of the white chocolate tablet.  If you like Cardamom, you will hopefully love this flavour.

Speyside Single Malt Whisky:  Speyside Whiskies are amongst the lightest and sweetest Malt Whiskies and we find they leave a wonderful depth of flavour to the tablet with honey tones.  If you don't like whisky, this is probably the one to start with!

Islay Single Malt Whisky Tablet: Islay Malts have a smoky character derived from peat, considered a central characteristic of the Islay malts, and ascribed both to the water from which the whisky is made and to the peating levels of the barley. Many describe this as a “medicinal” flavour. They also possess notes of iodine and seaweed. Add this to our award winning original tablet and you get a mix made in heaven. On tasting you first taste the sweetness of the tablet and only towards the very end do you start to taste the smokey peat notes. Wonderful with a coffee at the end of your meal.

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th March sees this years Wedding Fair and Fashion show at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.

We have been very lucky and haven't needed to exhibit at Wedding Fairs as most of our business comes from recommendation and word of mouth.

This is great news as it enables us to keep our marketing costs low and the savings can be passed on to you.

Described as "young, understated and strong", the Royal Pride of Scotland tartan consists of three shades of grey, with a vibrant royal blue overcheck, the inspiration for which came from Kate Middleton's engagement dress and the sapphire engagement ring, originally worn by Princess Diana. When should I order my Favours

"When should I order my favours, is a question we hear almost every day from Bride and Groom's planning ahead for the big day.

Here at Highland Favours, all our tablet is handmade to order and is made the day before we post your wedding favours to you. We therefore have a limited number of "Tablet Slots" per week, and these can fill up months in advance.

If you decide to use Highland Favours for your Favours we would encourage you to let us know as soon as possible so that we can reserve a tablet slot for you.(we have reservations right up to 2011)

There's 2 options at that point (1) Pay a £20.00 deposit to reserve the slot and pay for your favours 6 weeks prior to the wedding or (2) Pay the full balance of your favours on reservation. We are happy with whatever you prefer.

We can agree specifics such as numbers colours etc as we get closer to the wedding, the most important thing is to get the Tablet Slot booked.

If you are a last minute bride - don't panic - we keep some capacity each week for "Emergency Favours" so please contact us and we will try our hardest to accomodate your requests.

Highland Favours reaches Out Skerries!

We spent the last week at Beth and Mark's wedding in Out Skerries, about 1hr 40 mins in a ferry from the Shetland mainland.

We had the most amazing time - with fantastic weather for a whole week.

Beth and Mark had lovely individual ceramic favours but wanted tablet pots for each table for their guests to enjoy with coffee.

This worked really well and we complimented the True Blue wedding colours with True Blue ribbon.

It was really nice to be on the receiving end of our Wedding Tablet for a change - usually we make the tablet with love and then post off for your weddings. We always get lovely feedback, but it was nice to have the "guest"experience for a change.

The thistle legend
But why is it that such a proud people as the Scots should choose a humble weed as its national symbol? In truth, no-one knows. There is a legend which relates how a sleeping party of Scots warriors were almost set upon by an invading band of Vikings and were only saved when one of the attackers trod on a wild thistle with his bare feet. His cries raised the alarm and the roused Scots duly defeated the Danes. In gratitude, the plant became known as the Guardian Thistle and was adopted as the symbol of Scotland.

Sadly, there is no historical evidence to back up the tale and in fact, there's even confusion as to the type of thistle that we see represented everywhere. There are many species of thistle and the spear thistle, stemless thistle, cotton thistle, Our Lady's thistle, musk thistle and melancholy thistle have all been suggested as possible candidates.

The thistle as symbol
Whatever its origins, the thistle has been an important Scottish symbol for more than 500 years. Perhaps its first recognisable use was on silver coins issued in 1470 during the reign of James III and from the early 16th century, it was incorporated into the Royal Arms of Scotland. Scotland's premier Order of Chivalry, established in 1687, is The Most Ancient and Noble Order of the Thistle and its members wear a collar chain whose links are made of golden thistles. The Knights and Ladies of the Thistle also wear a breast star which bears the thistle emblem and a motto which is regularly associated with it, Nemo Me Impune Lacessit - 'no-one provokes me with impunity'.

Scottish Wedding Traditions

Wedding customs have changed quite dramatically over the years, but many still continue such as the good old "Scramble".... more about that later!!

Here's a few customs taken from the Scottish Wedding Traditions

On Barra, it was traditional to sprinkle water on the marriage bed and bless it. In Mull, it was customary that the young couple sleep in a barn for their first night and in Lewis they lived for a week with the bride's parents before going to their own home.

Celtic practices were part of ceremonies for many hundreds of years and had roots in pagan rituals. Tying the knot originated from the bride and groom ripping their wedding plaids (clan tartans) and tying the two strips together as a symbol of the unity of the two families.

According to Gaelic tradition it is unlucky to marry in the month of May or during a waning moon.

Tradition says sew a hair onto the hem of a wedding dress for luck, or let a drop of blood fall onto an inner seam. The bride must never try on a completed dress in advance of her wedding day. To facilitate this tradition a small section of the hem is left unsewn by the dressmaker until the last moment.

The bride, when she leaves home for the last time as a single girl, should step out of the house with her right foot for luck

Scottish Wedding Traditions!

Here's the first of our insights into Scottish Wedding Traditions:

In the lead up to the wedding a bride and groom traditionally receive lots of gifts from friends and relatives to help them furnish their new home. The Bride's mother usually holds a "show of presents" over a number of nights. Invitations are sent to those who gave wedding gifts to the couple and the wedding gifts are unwrapped and set out for viewing. I once heard of a Scottish Lady who had given cash as a present, but to ensure her present was on view to the locals - she obtained one of the large Presentation Style cheques from her Bank - so that her gift could also go on show!

After the show of presents the bride-to-be is often dressed up and her friends and then they go around the village, singing and making a racket! They usually cover the bride in Flour, Treacle, Curry Powder and then add some water!!! Yuck! This is then followed by a Hen Night to mark the Bride's last nights of freedom.

The groom is also "subject" to public humiliation - this can be known as a blackening. Quite often a wee lorry is hired and the groom driven round the village covered in gunge with the horn being tooted away!

On a recent visit to Orkney, a Blackening was happening - however after hours of circling the village with the groom getting dirtier and dirtier the van stopped and the groom was taken to the Cathedral in the middle of the Shopping area. He was then stripped and cling filmed to the post in frony of the Cathedral. and left for a few hours!

I bet they needed some Loch Leven Tablet to help them recover!!!
